
VADODARA, JAN 21: Thirty fire brigade employees from five municipal corporations in the State will receive an intensive training in management of fire-fighting at the three-day short course of the Fire Academy of the All-India Institute of Local Self Government AIILSG which began here on Thursday. The training programme has been declared compulsory by the State government for fire brigade personnel of all civic bodies.
The participants in the programme include fire brigade employees from Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Chhotaudepur and Vadodara. The next batch of the course, scheduled to be held in February, will include firemen from Surat, Bharuch, Valsad and Dangs.
Addressing the participants at the inauguration of the programme, AIILSG President Jatin Modi underlined the need for a disaster management institute in Vadodara. 8220;Reports by the Central government rank Vadodara city top-most, followed by Calcutta, in the high risk category from both natural and man-made disasters. As such it is essential that the State government, Vadodara Municipal Corporation VMC, non-governmental organisations NGOs and the Fire Academy join hands and work towards setting up a disaster management institute,8221; he said.
Adding that the AIILSG was awaiting the State8217;s approval to set up such an institute at the Academy premises, Modi told Express Newsline that the state government had called for a meeting in Gandhinagar with the AIILSG representatives to discuss the same. 8220;We hope to meet the officials concerned in the first week of February and present them a detailed action plan to deal with the prevailing situation in Vadodara,8221; he added.
The action plan will be based on a joint report of the District Collectorate, the Fire Academy and the AIILSG as well as the findings of city-based NGOs Society for Clean Environment SOCLEEN and Baroda Citizens8217; Council BCC.
