
A city court on Tuesday convicted three persons for murdering businessman and local Congress Seva Dal leader Surender Gupta. Gupta was stabbed and shot dead at the South Extension market in May 2003.
Additional Sessions Judge S K Sarvaria convicted main accused Sushil 25 Suresh 23 and Dalip 31, based primarily on the eyewitness account of Subodh Kumar, who used to work for Gupta. Meanwhile, another accused Lekhraj, a listed criminal in the area, was acquitted by the court.
The court has fixed November 19 as the day for sentencing the accused.
Investigations had revealed that Gupta, who owned a restaurant in the South Extension market, was killed because he owed Rs 2.5 lakh to Sushil and Rs 50,000 to Suresh, the police said.
The accused were arrested from Greater Noida and a country-made weapon had been seized from their possession. The police arrested them after they received information that these persons had been missing from their respective residences.
On the day of the murder, Gupta was headed for his restaurant when he was attacked by the accused near his residence in H-Block of South Extension Part I. They stabbed him on the face and then shot him. Gupta was rushed to the AIIMS, where he succumbed to injuries.
