Karkare8217;s last moments were spent doing what he liked best 8212; taking on a challenge and dealing with it. Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said on Thursday that Karkare was with him, DGP A N Roy and senior officials till 9.35 pm and was on his way home when he heard reports of the attacks. He first went to Oberoi, and later to CST. By the time Karkare reached there, the terrorists had fled to Cama Hospital. Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar had to replan their attack for the narrow bylanes behind the hospital. Sources said they were supposed to attack from the back, while another team was already trying to attack the terrorists from the front gate. Karkare told his junior staff to stay guard at the gate and that he, Salaskar and Kamte would march towards the firing. They were met with heavy firing, from both inside the premises and the rooftop. Eyewitnesses said the officers were also shot at indiscriminatingly by terrorists as they made their way out of the hospital. 8220;They fired at Salaskar and team in a police car. As the cops collapsed, some of them fled in the police vehicle,8221; said a witness. Patil said Karkare, Salaskar and Kamte were together, chasing the terrorists in a jeep, when they were shot at and killed. The bullet-proof didn8217;t help as the shots were fired from a close range. According to doctors at JJ Hospital, Karkare suffered four shots 8212; one on his neck and three on his chest.
