Star of Andaaz, Kashish, and having enacted a part in the recent blockbuster Border, Sudesh Berry airs his views on Bollywood, acting, co-stars…
"These actors of convenience have money, muscle power and backing. Acting is the last thing they think about.” Sudesh Berry TV and film actor wearing a very worried expression and little more than a white bathrobe seems like a man who’s bitter. He believes he has reason to be. Better-known for his role as Yash Thakur in the TV soap Andaaz, Berry’s experience on the sets of the blockbuster Border seems to be the main reason for that worried expression. “Border was a good learning experience thanks to J P Dutta, but I did not enjoy working with these so-called stars. Sunil Shetty, Sunny Deol and Akshaye Khanna did not have acting on their mind. They were there to indulge in sadistic pleasure, making me the butt of their jokes. Unki masti kuchh sasti hain,” (Their fun is in bad taste) he says. And what he is most cut about, is thepart muscleman Sunil Shetty played on the sets. (“Off-screen, they are better actors,” claims Berry).
Sunil Shetty seems to have been the villain of the piece. “An empty mind is Sunil’s workshop. All that guy has is muscles. Maybe the cameraman should start shots with Shetty in them leg-upwards. I have ten years of theatre with IPTA (Indian Peoples’ Theatre Association) behind me, and what does this guy have – his experience amounts to running an Udipi restaurant and collecting cash at the counter,” says Berry. When he does talk about acting beyond the Border experience, it is about his role in the “the best TV serial ever to be made.” Of course, this serial, called Jaan is yet to be made. About his current serials on air, he says,“My role in Andaaz will always be remembered in television history. But in Jaan I have a role that any actor can only dream of playing – a double role, one of a contract killer and the other of a poet.” Very original.
Berry insists that girls in the audience are a major reason for his success in television. The typical M&B hero-role he played in Kashish made him a ladies man. “With due respect to the female audience, I believe that girls are the reason for the success of any actor. Look at Shah Rukh Khan – Ladkiyan bandar ko bhi star bana sakti hain,” (Adoring girls can make a hero even of a monkey) he says. Berry is hoping he will finally be noticed for his acting abilities in his next venture, a film where he says Jackie (believe it or not) plays second fiddle and another film with Mithun Chakravarty. “I want to do at least two good movies a year that I can claim to be my movies. ” He certainly seems to be confident about the future.
