Amid high drama, 52 Shiv Sena legislators backing Bal Thackeray—one more than yesterday—were paraded before Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Babasaheb Kupekar at the Vidhan Bhavan today.
The MLAs, who have been camping at Le Meridian Hotel in the suburbs since last night, arrived in a bus around 11.30 am today to demonstrate their support for the party’s newly elected leader Ramdas Kadam. Kupekar, who belongs to NCP—the party wooing Rane—called in the MLAs one by one.
According to Kadam, ‘‘Every MLA signed an affidavit in front of the Speaker supporting the Sena’s decision to remove Rane.’’ He added that none of the MLAs would attend tomorrow’s meeting called by Rane.
Meanwhile, Rane also met Kupekar and submitted a letter stating that his removal from the post of Leader of Opposition was illegal. He also warned that all MLAs who do not attend his meeting on Friday would be expelled from the Sena’s legislature party. “They should know where their future lies. The MLAs should understand what I have done for them ,’’ he said.
Kupekar, for his part, refused to spell out his course of action. ‘‘I have to consider the legal and constitutional aspects before arriving at a decision,’’ he said.
