NAGPUR, April 30: Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray has landed in yet another legal imbroglio over his much-publicised election rally at Katol in February this year, with the founder president of Stree Atyachar Virodhi Parishad, Seema Sakhre, seeking his prosecution for 8220;making derogatory remarks against women.8221;
Acting on a writ petition filed by Sakhre in the High Court Bench at Nagpur, Justices M B Ghodeswar and S B Mhase today directed notices before admission, returnable by June 10, against Thackeray, Secretary to the State Home Department and Station House Officer of the Katol police station.
In her petition, Sakhare has alleged that the Sena chief8217;s verbal tirade during the rally went against 8220;the decency and dignity of women.8221; She described the Sena supremo8217;s speech as a 8220;glaring instance of gender-bias8221; violative of fundamental rights granted under Articles 14, 15 and 21 of the Constitution of India.
Sakhare also accused the police of inaction when she lodged a complaint against the Senachief after the controversial election rally held on February 7 this year at Katol. She had lodged a complaint with the Katol police on February 26 but the police sidelined her plaint as a non-cognisable offence, the petition said.
Her writ petition comes close on the heels of a similar plea filed by the Katol-based Congress activists in the lower court there. The lower court had sought an English translation of Thackeray8217;s speech, in which he is alleged to have made derogatory references to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, her predecessor Sitaram Kesri and party leader Saroj Khaparde.
