The 30-year-old units of light water Tarapur Atomic Power Plant 8212; units 1 and 2 8212; have enough fuel low enriched uranium for the next two years, said S.K. jain, the chairman and MD of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited NPCIL.
Reacting to a statement by Russia8217;s inability to provide low enriched uranium LEU, Jain said: 8216;8216;We do not foresee any trouble as far as the fuel supply for the two reactors are concerned.8217;8217;
Russia also indicated yesterday that it was ready to give any civilian nuclear technology and fuel to reactors in India provided it holds direct talks with the other key members of the supplier8217;s group.
TAPS units 1 and 2 are running under 100 per cent capacity at present, Jain said, adding that India had foreseen such difficulties earlier and was prepared with mixed oxide MOx fuel for the plant and a number of fuel bundles were already loaded and tested. 8216;8216;Since we will be using MOx fuel for the country8217;s future fast breeder reactors ina big way, we do not foresee any problem with the fuel requirement for the light water reactors of Tarapur,8217;8217; he said.
8216;8216;We are in the process of modernisation of taps 1 and 2 and the designs have been approved by AERB and would be able to service for at least another 15 years,8217;8217; he added.
