MUMBAI, July 11: When Swami Maheshanand opened the door of his room at the Chinmayananda Ashram at Powai on Friday morning, he probably had no inkling that death had come a-calling.

Saki Naka police say the 65-year-old swami, whose body was found in a pool of blood, must have been acquainted with his killer as there is no sign of forced entry. Moreover, police point out, the assailant had clearly arrived at the swami’s second floor apartment between midnight on Thursday and 6 am on Friday, which points to an `inside job’.

Investigations reveal that booty worth around Rs 20,000 was stolen from his room, including two crossed cheques of Rs 500 and Rs 201.
