CHANDIGARH, May 11: Suhasini Koratkar, the versatile exponent of the Bhindi Bazar Gharana, presented a selection of ghazals at the monthly baithak of the Pracheen Kala Kendra this evening. She has taken training from Pandit T.D. Zanorikar, the well known exponent of Bhindi Bazar Gharana.

The Pune-based singer, who is known for her perfect control of notes as well as for her extensive repertoire, delighted listeners with the opening number, a bada khayal, Eh ho kahe guman kare, in raag puriya.

The next number, Yeh jaagi jogi in raag gavati, jhaptaal stepped up the pace and demonstrated the singer8217;s ability to fully expound the patterns of the composition even when the taans are vigorous and the paltas complex.

A thumri, Sham Bhaji bin Shyam, was an instant hit with the audience 8212; remarkable for being a seamless blend of classical styles. The Meera bhajan, More Rana ji, main Govind gun gaana, moved at a stately pace suitable for expressing deep emotion.

All in all a performance worthy of her reputation. Koratkar is one of All India Radio8217;s A-grade artists, a Ph.D in music and a frequent performer on concert stages all over India.

Besides classical music, she excels in rendering dadra, tappa, thumri, bhajans and ghazals in their original styles, maintaining the traditional character and form. Jairam Potdar and Pawan Kumar accompanied the singer on the harmonium and tabla respectively.
