The first day of the third Test at the Kotla on Wednesday, apart from being Gautam Gambhir8217;s day under the sun, once again highlighted the strained relations between the Indian and Australian cricket teams.

This time, it was Gambhir who was involved in two separate on-field incidents, first with paceman Shane Watson and then with part-time left-arm spinner Simon Katich.

While he and Katich only exchanged words after the bowler seemed to block the Indian opener while he was scampering across for a run, it was the incident with Watson that could land the Delhi player into some trouble with the match-referee, though there was no official announcement from Chris Broad.

After flicking the ball into the vacant mid-wicket region, Gambhir was running the first run hard when Watson, right in his path, raised his arm in what seemed to be an attempt to block the batsman. Gambhir completed the run and, while going back for the second, stuck out his elbow, striking the bowler in the midriff.

8220;It was an accident,8221; Gambhir said later. 8220;Such things happen in cricket, especially in such a tough series. The way I was playing, I knew he Watson had very little chance of getting me out. So there was no need for me to do something like that deliberately.8221;
