KOLHAPUR, JANUARY 3: Eight people were injured in stone pelting after a private security guard fired in the air to scare away a mob at Uchgaon check post here on Sunday, police said.

According to police, the guard fired in the air to quell an irate mob which started pelting stones following altercations between a woman and check post employees over a petty issue.

The woman was carrying an empty barrel and check post employee asked her to pay octroi for it. The trouble started when she refused to pay.

City municipal corporation had recently handed over the collection of octroi on contract basis to a private company. The company had tightened vigil at all entry points to the city and guards were appointed to patrol the areas.

The woman filed a police complaint saying that the company staff at the check post beat up her and a relative. The octroi contractor has also lodged a cross complaint.

Police have seized the guns and cartridges from the possession of security guards at all the city octroi points after the incident.
