
CHENNAI: Devendra Kula Vellar Federation president Dr K Krishnaswamy, MLA, whose arrest on May 2 near Theni, sparked violent protest in southern districts, was ordered to be released on bail by the judicial magistrate in Periyakulam, according to sources.
Krishnaswamy, a Dalit leader, was arrested on the charge of making inflammatory speeches which had the potential of inciting communal passions. After making the speeches, he was proceeding with his supporters to Kandamanoor, where police had resorted to firing to disperse a violent mob which attempted to attack people of a particular community. He had been lodged in the central prison, Vellore.
Tension over land allotment to Dalits
MUZAFFARNAGAR: BSP and Bharatiya Kisan Union workers are locked in a conflict following the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision to allot land to 155 Harijan families at Alipurkala, near here. Farmers belonging to Jat community are opposing handing over the possession of land to the allotees causing considerable tension in the area. BKU president, Mahender Singh Tikait, said the allotment will lead to “caste riots” and threatened to stage a mass protest if farmers are asked to vacate the land.
Naxals blast TDP legislator’s house
HYDERABAD: Naxalites of the outlawed Peoples’ War Group (PWG) today blasted the house of Telugu Desam Party legislator, C Muthyam Reddy at Dubbaka village in Medak district of Andhra Pradesh. Naxalites of an unidentified group stormed into the house of the legislator and blasted it after asking the inmates to come out. Reddy was not present at the time of the incident.
Patwa gets bail in defamation case
BHOPAL: Senior BJP leader and former Madhya Pradesh CM, Sunderlal Patwa, was granted bail yesterday in a defamation case filed against him by the state Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh. The CM had filed a defamation case against Patwa and leader of Opposition in State Assembly, Vikram Verma, after they stated at a press conference last year that Singh had got an out of turn allotment of house in New Delhi and that his government had given land for a hospital at concessional rate in Durg district.
HC seeks status on Tantrik probe
NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Sunday asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) which has detained self-styled godman Chandraswami since April three for alleged FERA violations to the tune of Rs nine crore, to tell the court within a week as to the status of the probe. The court, while deferring the consideration of Chadraswami’s bail petition till May 12, asked ED to furnish details on action taken by them in the case till date.
