KOLHAPUR, Nov 23: Minister of State for Food and Civil Supplies Ramdas Kadam today stated that the State was bearing a loss of about Rs 22 crore following foodgrain being provided at subsidized rates through Public Distribution System PDS.
Talking informally to reporters here Kadam said that majority losses were incurred due to the supply of foodgrain at half-rates to the ration card holders below the poverty line.
State Government has been running the PDS to get foodgrain at reasonable rates to the people since the open market rates are higher than the buying capacity of the commonman. 8220;However, it does not mean that the government is responsible for the supply of hundred per cent foodgrain,8221; Kadam pointed out.
During the 1990-95 period, the then Congress government had failed to pick-up total quota from the Centre and subsequently the quota to Maharashtra sate was reducd 75,000 metric tonnes from the total 2.25 crore metric tonnes, he said.
Reacting sharply to MLC Mahadev Mahadik8217;s allegions Kadam stated that Shiv Sena corporators did not sell themselves to the Congress during the election.
Sena corporators in Kolhapur Municipal Corporation cooperated Mahadik for his help in last Lok Sabha elections, he said.
It was baseless the charges against him by Congress MLAs that he was not present during the District Planning and Development Council budget meeting held recently in Mumbai, as he himself arranged the said meeting, Kadam said.
