MUMBAI, Sept 24: The Saamna Group of Publications will be holding a state-level under-14 overs-limited cricket tournament for the Saamna Trophy from October 30 at various ground of the city.

The six-day event will feature two teams from Mumbai besides sides from Thane, Pune, Aurangabad Sambhaji Nagar, Konkan, Nasik and Vidarbha regions respectively.

The eight teams will be divided into two groups of four teams each in the league phase. The top two from each group will then advance to the semi-finals.

Uddhav Thackrey, trustee of the Saamna Group, while addressing a press conference yesterday evening said that the main objective of holding such an event was to give an exposure to the youngsters of other districts of the state.

Besides trophies for the eventual champions and runners-up attractive cash prizes are also at stake. The winners will pocket Rs 25,000, the runners-up Rs 15,000 and the losing semi-finalists Rs 5,000 each. Cash awards for individual excellence will also begiven.

The tournament will comprise of 35 overs each and will be staged under the auspices of Mumbai Cricket Association.

The groupings: Group A: Mumbai A, Pune, Sambhaji Nagar, Konkan. Group B: Mumbai B, Thane, Nashik, Vidarbha.

The Gokuldham Chess Club will conduct a two-day Rapid Chess tournament for under-21 from October 1 at Bhavan8217;s College, Andheri West.

Entries will be accepted at Monginis Cake Shop Samrat Enterprises, Goregaon E and by RK Asthana, sports director, Bhavan8217;s College, Andheri.

Last date for submission of forms is September 29.
