February 15: Manipur fans had reasons to celebrate at the end of the day, even though it started off badly and appeared to remain that way. Both the men8217;s and women8217;s basketball teams of the host state lost their matches in the morning and the men8217;s tennis team suffered a humiliating defeat.
However, the women8217;s hockey team made amends by defeating Chandigarh 4-0. They were leading 1-0 at half-time. In another match played earlier, Maharashtra beat Delhi 4-0 HT 3-0.
The Manipur girls dominated from the very beginning and struck as early as the seventh minute when Surajlata Devi scored a great field goal after a move down the left flank. Receiving the ball outside the Chandigarh striking circle, Surajlata8217;s fierce shot hit the target.
She had an excellent game and proved dangerous for Chandigarh even when she was off the ball. Running really well, she came close to scoring again numerous times before finding the target in the 67th minute. That was also the last of Manipur8217;s four goals.
The secondgoal came in the 48th minute with Sangai Ibemhal scoring a field goal. The strike wasn8217;t spectacular but it made a lot of difference to the team8217;s morale. The third came in the 64th minute when Pakpi Devi scored.
Maharashtra, on the other hand, converted two of their penalty corners which fetched them the first and the last goals. Captain Silvania scored the first in the 21st minute, while Paulina Surin got the fourth in the 47th minute. Surin8217;s goal was the only goal in the second half. Nadia Sayed and Ashwini got the two field goals before the break.
