MUMBAI, AUG 25: The Shiv Sena-BJP government has sold out to the landlords-builders lobby and misled the tenants of Mumbai, alleged Murli Deora, president of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee. He was referring to the scheme by which tenants could own old and dilapidated houses by paying an amount equivalent ot 100 months8217; rent.

The scheme was legislated but challenged by the landlords-builders under the aegis of Property Owners8217; Association. When the Bombay High Court ruled in favour of the tenants, the association appealed in the Supreme Court.

However, Deora says, the Sena-BJP government 8220;has done nothing to expedite the case; on the contrary they are doing everything to sabotage it,8221; said Deora.

He questioned the intentions of the alliance government saying, 8220;There seems to be an official conspiracy to kill this scheme altogether and harass the tenants. Tenants after fulfilling all requirements approached the Special Land Acquisition Officer and applied for ownership but their applications were rejected on frivolous grounds.8221;

Apparently, pleas made to the housing minister, MHADA chairman and MHADA president have not made a difference; instead they are threatening Anil Goenka, president of the Old Buildings Association, added Deora.
