MUMBAI, June 24: Advocate General A V Sawant reassured the Bombay High Court today that the Justice Srikrishna Commission report on the 1993 Mumbai riots would be tabled in both the Houses of the Legislature in the forthcoming session starting from July 20.Sawant, who gave a similar assurance to the same bench last week, told the court that the report could be placed any time between July 20 and August 5.The assurance came in the wake of a petition filed by Mumbai Aman Committee, All India Milli Council, Ulema Council, Muslim Youth Federation and People's Union of Civil Liberties, seeking a court directive for the tabling of the report as soon as possible.Sawant today said the original report will be placed along with the ATR (Action Taken Report) and the required Marathi translation. He said copies of the report will be made available to the publicity department of the State Government, the press and also the petitioners. The bar associations, namely Bombay Bar Association and Advocates' Association ofWestern India, will also be given copies of the report.Under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, the Government is duty-bound to table the report before the Legislature session, within six months of its submission. The monsoon session of the State Legislature commences on July 20 and the six month period expires on August 15.Meanwhile, the petitions are now slated for hearing on August 10, so that the petitioners can inform the court whether the State Government has met the deadline. The division bench of justice B P Saraf and justice A Y Sakhare is hearing the case.
