The Maharashtra government has asked the SC to give a quietus to the petition seeking implementation of the Justice Sri Krishna Commission report into the 1992 Mumbai riots.
Senior Advocate Ashok Desai, appearing for Maharashtra, said the PIL filed in 1998 has ‘‘worked itself out’’ because much of its prayers have since been addressed by the present Congress-NCP government.
The petitioner had sought the SC’s intervention because the earlier government run by the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance had rejected the Commission report which indicted, among others, Bal Thackeray.
But the present government, in the wake of the PILs, entrusted the crime branch with the task of conducting further investigations ‘‘uninfluenced by the action-taken report’’ submitted by the earlier government. Desai also quoted statistics of the cases in which the police have either filed charge-sheets or taken disciplinary action.
