PUNE, Sept 24: Shikshan Prasarak Mandali SPM eves clinched the PDMGSC under-17 basketball title defeating Sardar Dastur High School 25-16 at the Don Bosco courts today.
Both teams, well geared up, fought for supremacy from the very start of play. The first-half turned out to be exciting with both teams playing an all out game owing to both fielding their best line-up. The tooth and nail tie saw Dastur lead 9-8 at the end of the first-half. The second-half started with Dastur having to substitute two of its key players due to injuries. The result began to tilt in SPM8217;s favour, as they began to surge ahead with some rapid shooting. Dastur failed to catch up at any time and had to remain content as runners-up. SPM8217;s performance was indicated by the final score which had a nine-point margin in their favour.
The winners were assisted by Shama Joshi 8 and Amruta Rane 6, while Rashmi Ranmalkar 10 played well for the losers.
Deccan Supreme: Later, Deccan Gymkahana stayed ahead of Honeybees 33-28 to take home the title in the open category. A rapidly played game with regular scoring by both sides. The first-half ended with a close score. Eventually the winners accelerated in the last 10 minutes to assure themselves of the title.
Khushboo Sancheti and Sayali Umranikar dunked in ten points each. Rashmi Ranmalkar supported the losers with 15 points.
Fergusson Win: Fergusson Junior College won the under-19 boys title overwhelming Loyola Junior College by 40-16 in another backlog final which was played eventually.
The lads from Fergusson were superior and were always fancied to win which they also proved. Omkar Kadam dunked in twelve points, while Apoorva Sontakke chipped in with eight points, for the winners. The losers were consolidated by Abhilekh Jha who scored ten points.
