BHUBANESWAR, JUNE 2: In a late night decision on Tuesday, the State government placed six officers, including former Khurda district collector Sarbeswar Mohanty and Superintendent of Police S S Hansda, under suspension for the police firing at Sorana village on Saturday night, killing three persons and injuring over 20 others.

The State has also transferred Revenue Divisional Commissioner Central Division Ashok Tripathy and Khurda Sub-Collector Vishal Dev.

The four other officers who have been suspended include Khurda Additional Superintendent of Police H K Gadnaik, Banpur tehsildar B B Mohapatra and circle inspectors of Khurda and Balugaon Sudhir Chandra Das and Keshab Chandra Mohapatra, respectively.

Earlier on Sunday, Sarbeswar Mohanty, who had already received the transfer order, was asked to hand over the charge to Aparajita Sarangi.

A meeting presided by Chief Minister Giridhar Gamang at his official residence here also directed the district authorities of Khurda, Ganjam and Puri to demolishall the illegal gheries.

It was also decided to bring a legislation to protect the capture fishing by local fishermen and ban all lease for culture fishing in and around Chilka.

Meanwhile, the central division RDC has submitted a report on the incident to the State government.

Besides facing stiff criticism from the Opposition parties, the Chief Minister was also under pressure from some of his senior Cabinet colleagues for taking tough action against the officials responsible for the mid-night raid, which led to the police firing at Sorana village.
