VISAKHAPATNAM, DEC 12: South Zone, who need another 11 runs to avoid a follow on, were struggling at 160 for six in their first innings in reply to West Zone total of 321 for nine declared on the penultimate day of five-day Duleep Trophy semi-final match at the Ukku stadium here today.

Sarath with 51 and Venkatapathy Raju 16 were at the crease when the stumps were drawn.

Earlier West Zone resuming at overnight score of 243 for four added only 78 runs. Overnight batsmen Jatin Paranjpe and Wasim Jaffer perished soon. Paranjpe was first to go caught by MSK Prasad for 46. Centurion Wasim Jaffer was caught at 133 by Amit Pathak of the bowling of D Ganesh. Paras Mhambrey (26 runs) was the only batsman to reach double figures. Sunil Joshi and David Johnson were the successful bowler for South Zone by claiming three wickets each.

South Zone started the innings on a disastrous note losing opener Sujith Somasundar (0) on the second ball of the innings of the bowling of Paras Mhambrey. Other opener Amit Pathak (13) perished soon of the bowling of Mhambrey caught by Kulkarni, when the total was just 38.However, a 50 run partnership between VVS Laxman (46) and Sarath (51 batting) enabled South Zone to better their position. Laxman’s inning was studded with five fours and a six.
