SOLAPUR, June 18: The Solapur Municipal Commissioner D N Mandalekar has made it clear that the telecom and other departments have been asked not to dig the newly surfaced roads without prior consent from the SMC.

Talking to the media persons after completing one year at the SMC, Mandalekar said out of the 21 city roads, 17 have already been re-done An amount of Rs.2.65 crores was spent for the resurfacing. The rest of them were nearing completion, but the advent of monsoon could delay work, he said.

Mushrooming enroachment has been a headache to the SMC as they often come up despite repeated demolitions, he said. More than 2550 illegal structures were raised after he took over charge in Solapur, he said.

None was spared or shown any favours as some 912-odd illegal structures were demolished within two months, he said.

On the 12 thousands illegal constructions in haddwadh area, he said the corporation has sought directives from the State Government on regularising these structures with penalties. The SMC would act only after getting these directives, he said.

Mandalekar said the inadequate distribution of water was another common problem before his took charge.8220;After a proper co-ordination between the zonal offices and concern technician of the wards, the distribution has been improved,8221; he said. Besides all 371 borewells in the city which were almost abandoned have been brought back to use, he added.

Mandalekar also claimed to have augmentated the SMC kitty with concerted efforts involving all those concerend. The municipal corporation8217;s octroi income has gone up by Rs 2.25 crore despite a general slack in the market.

About the plantation, programme he said that 30 thousand trees were planted in the city echo friendly quot;. The survival rate is more than 70 per cent which is a sign of awareness among people, he said.

Mandalekar emphasised on the computerisation of various departments and said all the sections receipts were being provided on computer and the results are tremendous as 50 receipts were disbursed within an hour, he said.

He also maintained that the SMC employees strength has gone up as 885 daily wages employees have been regularised so far. While 73 employees were promoted in the services.
