BANGALORE, Aug 3: An acclaimed software expert has said that India was facing a serious threat from China in software exports and warned that it could loose out to the neighbouring country in five years if it failed to take steps to retain the lead.

He said India needs to increase the size of the domestic software industry. unless we have a vibrant domestic market, we will not be able to sustain ourselves at the global level on a long-term basis.

Murthy said Indian software companies should be highly adaptable, pro-active and respond quickly to change8217;. 8220;Otherwise, we will not exist in the future.8221; Software companies, he said, had also to learn to create a brand equity abroad, and regretted that there is not a single Indian multi-national company.

Murthy said India should be investor and software-friendly to make it most attractive environment to invest and attract global capital. India8217;s software exports were projected to be 3.75 billion this fiscal, going up from 2.5 billion in 1998-99, headded.

India8217;s total exports account for just about nine per cent of the GDP which, according to him, is not a stable model8217;. It should be increased to about 25 per cent of the GDP as in the case of China and Brazil, Murthy said.
