VADODARA, June 14: The Society for Clean Environment SOCLEEN has appealed to the Gujarat Pollution Control Board, District Collector Anil Mukim, Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma and the other authorities concerned to check the alleged unauthorised discharge of effluents by tankers near Sindhrot.

In a letter to GPCB Regional Officer N L Kansagra two months ago, SOCLEEN President V V Modi had stated that many residents near Sindhrot were complaining that tankers from industrial units on the north-western part of the city were dumping effluents at odd places near Sindhrot and in various culverts, mainly during the night.

Modi had requested the GPCB to look into the matter and bring the culprits to the book.

Replying the letter, GPCB Environmental Engineer R G Shah has stated that the matter could not be resolved by the GPCB alone and 8220;it needs action from the various departments8221; of the State Government.

Assuring Modi that the matter would be taken up with the right quarters, Shah requested SOCLEEN to join the efforts required to nab the victims.

Meanwhile, in an appeal to the city authorities, SOCLEEN has pointed out that if radical steps were not taken to control this exercise, much of the fertile area near Bharuch and Vadodara could be damaged beyond repair. The organisation has stated that if GPCB had no control on tankers carrying affluents, they should discourage this mode of disposal.
