A clinic for slum dwellers
The Inner Wheel Club of Pune Central has adopted a slum in Viman Nagar. Corporator, John Paul of Yerwada was instrumental in helping the club take up this particular project. To start off, a small make-shift clinic has been set up there. The clinic, was inaugurated by President Kavita Goel and Secretary Shree Datar. Treasurer Aruna Kholi were present along with other members – Kokila Sheth, Fatima Chinoy, Shoma Majumdar Sudarshan Sharma and Suchi Bhargava. Goel also distributed sweets and gifts to the cleanest hut and also planted trees around the slum. Dr Madhavi Paradkar will see the patients at the clinic once a week. She will also educate the slum dwellers on subjects like AIDS and cancer. Medicines have been donated by Rotarian Anil Bora.

Shrimad Jayateertha Swamiji’s Punyathiti observed
The six hundred and thirty second punyatithi of Shrimad Jayateertha Swamiji, the sixth descendant after Madhwacharaya in the Uttaradi Mutt Prampara, and an eminent scholar and writer who made an outstanding contribution to the Dwaita system of Indian philosophy expounded by the great acharya Madhwa, was observed on August 5, at the Sanskritik Bhawan, Pradhikaran, Pune.

The programme consisted of chanting 108 times Shri Jayateertha Stuti discourses on the life and teachings of the Swamiji and the importance of performing SEWA and earning Swamiji’s grace.

Shri Gururajacharya Galgali, chief trustee of the Nava Vrindavan Sewa Samiti, Pune conducted the function which was attended by the nearly 300 Madhwa devotees.

St Anne’s bags YMCA trophy
St Anne’s High School, Pune, won the YMCA trophy and cash award, scoring maximum points in the second Inter School Competition in the patriotic song group contest, organised by the Poona YMCA.

In a keenly contested competition in which more than 500 students from thirty-two schools took part, the Deccan Education Society English Medium School stood second and St. Felix High School won the third prize.

In the Elocution Competition on the subject India towards the next millennium,’ Vidya Niketan High School (Telco), Chinchwad, bagged the two prizes, one in Marathi and the other in Hindi. Thirty nine students participated in the competition. The other winners are:

Brigadier Madan Gopal, President, Pune Cantonment inaugurated the competitions and Dr M. Durairaj, President, Poona YMCA distributed the prizes. General secretary Baby K. Roy welcomed the gathering and the programme secretary Praveen Mckenzie proposed the vote of thanks.

Blood donation camp
The Anandban Club arranged a blood donation camp, at the camp premises in aid of the Kargil jawans, on August 6. The AFMC Blood Transfusion Department aided the process. The camp saw an active participation from club members, Rotary Club of Pune North-East, Citizen Culture Club and Aundh Medical Group. A total of 66 bottles of blood were donated.

Celebrating Independence day with the jawans
The Inner Wheel Club of Pune Central celebrated Independence day with the jawans at the Artificial Limb Centre. The club donated three wheel chairs to the jawans of Kargil on behalf of Fresenius Kabi India Ltd. Yogesh Vaghani. managing director, Milton Plastics, donated 100 water bottles to the jawans. Kavita Goel, president of the club and members along with rotarians distributed shirts, audio cassettes, water bottles and fruits to all the jawans treated at the Artificial Limb Centre. The club had also organised a jumble sale at Yerawada, the proceeds of which went Kargil fund.

Collective effort
The Dehu Road Malayalee Samajam has collected Rs 14,222 from its all its members. They handed over the cheque to Station Commander, Brigadier Iqbal Singh on Independence day at MES club, Dehu Road.

Unique celebration
The students of IBMR (Parvati) celebrated the Independence day at The Pune Railway Station and Pune Airport. The students tagged the tricolour to railway authorities, passengers, policemen and to few dignitaries.

Homes for the needy
On Independence day, the Bombay Diocesan Trust Association (BDTA) commemorated the occasion with Flag Hoisting and a cultural programme. The celebration was augmented with the handing over of the apartments for Christians belonging to the lower income group. A roof over the head which actually is a necessity that has become a luxury in cities because of shortage of space. To address to this need for the economically backward people of the community, the BDTA undertook the project of constructing a housing complex at Shankersheth road. The two buildings comprising of 82 flats were sold at less than half the market rate and were handed over to the owners at the Independence day function. Rev P.B. Amolik, honourary secretary BDTA, C.A. Kemkar, honourary treasurer, Ms Inayat and other members of the association were present at the function.
