SURAT, July 8: The Surat Municipal Corporation SMC has formed 14 teams of health workers and set up three relief camps in the South Zone to meet any eventuality during the monsoon.

Deputy Commissioner Health and Hospital Dr R P Sinha told Express Newsline that 14 teams comprising a doctor, a public health nurse, and two vaccinators had been formed considering the possible outbreak of waterborne diseases during the season.

He said a team equipped with medicine would be ready round-the-clock at SMC. Dr Sinha, who is also in charge of Rander Zone, said two incidences of wall collapse were reported in his zone on Monday. No one was injured, he added.

Meanwhile, South Zone has set up three relief camps for residents from Bhestan Road and Navi colony in Umarwada, who were shifted following heavy rains. About 400 people shifted are provided food packets. Deputy Commissioner general Ashwin Mehta and incharge of South Zone said civic workers were pumping out water from low-lying areas including Sri Ram Nagar and Hedgewar Road. Meanwhile, the weir-cum-causeway continued to be closed for vehicular traffic for the third day on Tuesday as water was still flowing above the danger mark.

Repair and patch-work was on at various places where the roads have caved in following heavy rains.
