Indian lifters grab 12 medals in C’wealth championships

NAURU: Sanamacha Chanu of India has been declared the best woman lifter, while compatriots Sumita Laha and Ujwala Mane won gold and silver in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held in this picturesque Pacific Island.

Altogether, India grabbed 12 medals — five gold, six siver and one gold — in the championship which ended yesterday.

Indian women put up a good show with Sumita Laha winning the gold in the 75 kg category and Ujwala Mane silver in the 75-plus kg category. Sumita defeated her Australian rival Pilegi by a huge margin of 22.2 kg, while Ujwala got the second place with 202.5 kg, 2.5 kg behind Olivia Bihar of New Zealand.

In the men’s section, Dalvir Singh in the 105-plus kg category won a silver with a total haul of 325 kg (145+180). Liddel of New Zealand bagged the gold with a total of 352.5 kg (150+202.5).

The third slot also went to Kiwis weightlifter Salves with 320 kg.

Symcox called schoolkids"coolies"

JOHANNESBURG: Pat Symcox refused to comment on the disciplinary committee’s warning and fine of 500 rand against the South African offie for using foul language against an autograph hunting fan of Indian origin.

The fine was imposed after the United Cricket Board of South Africa (UCBSA) ordered to investigate the question of whether there were any racial undertones attached to the complaint made by a 17-year-old cricket fan Suleiman Bhamjee against Symcox.

Bhamjee’s complaint said, "when I sought autograph, Symcox said, `I don’t care a …. You don’t put money into my bank account," Bhamjee complained of Symcox having said. The incident took place during the second Test between South Africa and the Pakistan at the Kingsmead cricket ground in Durban last month.

Symcox also called other school children "coolies" when they made requests for autographs. Meanwhile, Bhamjee, who is an opening batsman for a club in Pietermaritzburg, said he was happy that justice had been done. "People who arerole models in society ought to act like role models. Symcox let himself down," he added.

Tollygunj trounce Mohd Sporting

BANGALORE: Tollygunj Agragami set things in order from the first half and pressed hard to earn three full points with a 3-1 win in their fourth match against Mohammedan Sporting in the Second Division National Football League inter-group play off matches here today.

Mohammadan Sporting scored first in the eighth minute through Sanjay Manjhi. Arunana Sarkar equalised just before half-time. Tollygunj dominated the second half. Mohamed Bakthikararuddin’s shot outside the box fetched Tollygunj the lead in the 56th minute.

Courab Sengupta scored the final goal, positioning himself and pushing it in in the 66th minute.
