Tillstrom accounts for Kucera
World number 10 Karol Kucera of Slovakia today crashed out to unseeded Mikael Tillstrom of Sweden in the first major upset of the $ 430,000 ATP Tour Gold Flake Open tennis tournamente. Last year’s runner-up Tillstrom defied the seedings and scored a well deserved 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over second-seeded Kucera in a tie described by the Swede as a "revenge match."

Punjab confident
All roads in this part of the country lead to Anandpur Sahib, venue for the Tercentenary celebrations of the Birth of Khalsa. The celebrations may have overshadowed whatever else has been happening here, but the mood in the Punjab cricket team’s camp is no less euphoric on the eve of their five-day Ranji Trophy semifinal clash with the defending champions Karnataka. The fact that their opponents’ aura of invincibility is missing due to curious scheduling of the premier national tournament, it presents the team with a golden chance to mark their entry into the finals after a gap of four years.

Anybody’s game
It will be a `hotly’ contested affair when Hyderabad, riding high, clash with a spirited Madhya Pradesh in the five-day Ranji Trophy semi-final starting from tomorrow. Hyderabad might not have expected an easy outing in the quarter-finals. But it will be altogether a different ball game in this match.

McGrath fined
Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath was fined 30 per cent of his match fee (about Rs 60,312) yesterday for bringing the game into disrepute. International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Raman Subba Row severely reprimanded McGrath for spitting on the pitch after the last ball of the fourth day’s play in the fourth and final Test against West Indies on Wednesday.

Kucera happy
It was a year ago at the Australian Open when the gentle giant from Bratislava, Karol Kucera, came into prominence with a stunning victory over World No.1 Pete Sampras in the quarterfinals.
