NEW DELHI, May 28: Rajasthan’s rape case involving a hostel girl in Jaipur sparked off a furore in the Lok Sabha with Congress members accusing the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Government of shielding the culprits.

Members from the ruling BJP and Congress clashed repeatedly even as Parliamentary Affairs Minister Madan Lal Khurana assured them that he would request the Home Minister to make a statement on the issue in the House.

Dissatisfied by the Government’s assurance, angry Congress members trooped into the well of the House and staged a dharna for a while.

Sumitra Mahajan and a few others from BJP sought to counter the Congress charge, saying similar incidents had taken place in the Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh and demanding a thorough probe into them.

This was strongly protested by Congress members who said the Home Minister should first make a statement on the Rajasthan incident and later he could do so regarding other states.

Leader of the Opposition Sharad Pawar decried what he termed asruling BJP’s attempts at politicising the sensitive issue. The issue was raised by Usha Meena and Prabha Thakur during zero hour.
