Cardiff, Nov 6: An amateur soccer match in North Wales was called off due to excessive sheep droppings on the pitch. Referee Mike Griffiths cited health and safety reasons for calling off the game between Waunfawr and Llanrug United in the Caernarfon and District League. He made the decision an hour before the game yesterday.

“One side of the pitch was all right with only a few droppings, but the other half was covered in it,” Griffiths said. “It’s a serious issue for the players as they could get nasty infections. If I had played the game and someone had cut themselves and got infected, it would have been my liability, so I `ad no choice. One of the lads said we could go around the pitch with a wheelbarrow to collect (the droppings) but there were so many it would have taken about five hours.”
