‘She returned ring 2 days before’

During his interaction with the Versova police, Khanduja had told that Nafisa would regularly consume up to 10 pegs of alcohol, get violent, and that this was very difficult for him handle. She was addicted to sleeping pills like Restil, he reportedly said.

Khanduja said Nafisa returned her engagement ring after a bout of drinking on the night of July 27. ‘‘I have set you free,’’ she apparently told Khanduja.

As a fallout, Khanduja is said to have added that they had many arguments and that the families saw it coming.

Nafisa’s mother Usha flew in from Bangalore and Khanduja’s mother went to receive her at Santacruz airport on July 28. With Nafisa, the two drove to Khanduja’s house at Land Breeze in Pali Hill. His sister had also come from Bangalore the next day in a bid to find a solution between the two.

They failed and Nafisa’s mother returned to Versova around 6 pm. She tried to convince her daughter to start a new life in London or some other city in Europe. Nafisa killed herself three hours later.

Police are still to record statements of other family members.
