
Maria Sharapova8217;s unbeaten start to the year came its closest to ending when she took nearly three hours to subdue Alona Bondarenko in the Pacific Life Open fourth round on Tuesday.
Sharapova outlasted Bondarenko 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 for her 17th consecutive win, while three-time champion Roger Federer took only 54 minutes to dispatch Nicolas Mahut 6-1, 6-1.
In night matches, top seed Ana Ivanovic downed Francesca Schiavone 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 and Lindsay Davenport beat Marion Bartoli 6-2, 7-5, while men8217;s No. 11 Andy Murray rallied past Croatia8217;s Ivo Karlovic 7-6 7, 6-7 3, 6-3. Germany8217;s Tommy Haas beat Fernando Verdasco of Spain, 7-6 5, 4-6, 6-1.
2006 champion Sharapova seemed to put added zip on her serves and groundstrokes after Bondarenko went up 4-3 in the third set. Sharapova won the final three games, losing just one point in each of the last two.
