CHANDIGARH, April 19: The national champion, Shamsher Singh of Chandigarh retained the title in the final bout of the heavy weight category of the Second Federation Cup and Rustam-e-Hind Indian Style Wrestling Championship which concluded at Mini Stadium, Jammu today.
In the Rustam-e-Hind heavy weight title, the defending champion Shamsher used good holds and displayed muscle power to beat Sohan Singh of Haryana to retain the title. He bagged gold medal, a silver mace, Rs 21,000 cash prize and a Patta besides the title. The runners up, Sohan bagged silver besides the cash prize of Rs 11,000 and the trophy.
To claim the bronze at third place, Naresh Kumar of Railways beat Jammu and Kashmir state champion Balkar Singh.
In 85 kg weight category, Allamai (Rehmut Ali) of the host state bagged the gold while in 76 kg weight category state’s best wrestler Dheeraj Sharma bagged bronze.
Prizes were presented by several distinguished persons which included Inspector General of Police, Gopal Sharma, Secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council and Sheikh Fazal Ahmad.
Rampal shines
Punjab National Bank beat United India Assurance by seven wickets while Canara Bank defeated Life Insurance Corporation of India by nine runs in the Inter-Bank/Financial Institutions cricket tournament here today.
After restricting UIA to 121 for 8 in the allotted 25 overs, H S Sandhu scored 38 runs to guide PNB home.
In the other match Rampal’s fine knock of 81 propped up Canara Bank’s massive total of 191 for 9. However, lic did not cave in meekly. They fought gallantly but lost in the end by a mere nine runs.

Canara Bank: 191 for 9 (Rampal 81, Uday 56, Sikri 27, H Sharma 4-29) beat LIC: 182 for 9 (Kuldeep 29, Ashwani 32, Rakesh 29, Uday 3-33, Charan Dass 3-31).
