AUG 27: Key hitman in the JJ Hospital shootout case and associate of gangster Chhota Shakeel, Jitendra Rane, was killed in an encounter with police at Chembur late Saturday night.
<>Rane along with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim8217;s associate Sunil Sawant and Uttam Dhoiphode had attacked Arun Gawli men at JJ Hospital in September 1993. Two police constables were killed in the assault.
On a tip-off, a special squad under Assistant Commissioner of Police Ramakant Padval laid a trap for Rane near MSEB quarters at around 11.30 pm off Eastern Express Highway at Chembur. The gangster was killed in the subsequent exchange of fire and an imported .38 Smith and Wesson revolver recovered from him.
Rane is ranked 12th among the top 20 gangsters and shooters wanted by Mumbai police. The list was recently revised, police sources said.
