Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), the cash-rich mini Parliament of the Sikhs, is all set for a corporate makeover with the induction of a chief secretary, a director general of education, finance secretary and others to usher in efficiency and accountability. The SGPC is reportedly wooing retired bureaucrats, senior army officers, academicians and economists for the posts with handsome salaries and perks.

This corporatisation is learnt to be the brainchild of Shiromani Akali Dal working president Sukhbir Singh Badal. Interviews have also been held to appoint a Chief Security Officer besides a technical head who will broadly take care of infrastructure and power.

In the absence of all these key posts, the efficiency of SGPC was arguably below the mark. SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar, who has had two stints as president and is vying for another in the November 23 elections, said: “The idea is to serve the organisation as best as you can. These new recruitment will ensure there’s more transparency and discipline.”

Makkar said the organisation is looking forward to an experienced administrator for the coveted post of its Chief Secretary. “We’ve interviewed prospective candidates, including retired bureaucrats and administrators. We hope to zero in on some names soon.”

While the merits of the move are hard to ignore, sources said a section fears they will lose of control with the emergence of alternative power centres. But others welcomed the move.
