Seven arrested in connection with communal clash over eve teasing

The Rajkot rural police on Saturday arrested seven people in connection with a communal clash that broke out in Uptela town late on Thursday, reportedly due to a row over an eve teasing incident.

The Rajkot rural police on Saturday arrested seven people in connection with a communal clash that broke out in Uptela town late on Thursday, reportedly due to a row over an eve teasing incident.

The incident took place when Meraman Arjan Dav 28, a resident of Upleta, allegedly misbehaved with a Muslim woman of the same town. Dav, who was in an inebriated state at the time of the incident, started beating the woman8217;s husband when the latter intervened, the police said.

This provoked a clash and members of the two communities started attacking each other. Upleta police resorted to a lathicharge and opened three rounds of fire in the air to disperse the mob. No one was reported injured in the police firing.

N D Solanki, Superintendent of Rajkot rural police, said: 8220;A total of seven persons from both communities have been arrested on charges of rioting. The main accused, Dav, however, managed to flee. We have launched a manhunt to nab him.8221;

Solanki added that security arrangements have been stepped up in the communally sensitive town to avoid any untoward incident.
