
CHANDIGARH, MARCH 16: The services at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research were partially hit as members of the PGI Employees Union proceeded on a mass casual leave here today.
With more than 100 employees of Class III and IV proceeding on a day8217;s casual leave, the sanitation and other services were partially hit. Since the nurses and doctors were not on leave, the health services were not affected.
The emergency services were normal since the sanitation of this part of the hospital is in private hands. Also the OPD8217;s worked normally despite the abstaining employees although the number of patients being attended to were less in number.
The PGI Union is demanding patient care allowance to group B employees, transport allowance, risk allowance, early meeting of Bakshi committee on non-faculty staff besides other things. The president of the Union, Ashwini Munjal said: quot;A large number of the employees are on the same post for the last over 20 years. A high powered committee comprising of Chief Justice R.N. Aggarwalretd, Venod Sharma, former Union Minister and Dr B.K. Sharma, director PGI, had recommended to clearing of the backlog promotions from February 95 to 97. But these have not been implemented.quot;
Meanwhile, the relatives could be seen tending to their patients, wheeling them in and pushing the trolleys in the absence of the agitating employees.
Munjal added, quot;In our general body meeting we have decided to resort to indefinite strike from March 23. Krishan Chand, who was on indefinite hunger strike from March 11 has been replaced by Gurnam Singh, the president of PGI Ex-servicemen Association.quot;
