Mumbai, May 25: Share prices generally remained firm today lifting the Sensex by about 31 points on the Bombay Stock Exchange BSE mainly on renewed buying by operators and fresh purchases from foreign funds.

Sensex started steady at 4029.24 and moved between 4075.39 and 4018.67 before closing at 4060.08 with a modest gain of 31.10 points as compared to the previous level of 4028.98. The BSE-100 index looked up by 17.97 points to 1756.89 from the previous close of 1738.92.

Brokers said operators, who kept away at the initial stages anticipating a short-term correction with a broad sideways movement, made some purchases after mid-session to transfer their positions from the National Stock Exchange NSE which witnessed squaring up at the last day of the current account.

FIIs reportedly purchased scrips like Proctor amp; Gamble, Wartsila, Pentafour Software, Smithkline Consumer and some Indian stocks. Impressive financial results declared by tobacco giant ITC were discounted by the market and the ITC scripdropped by Rs 38.40 to Rs 1074.90 as the results were below the market expectations.

Pentafour Software remained the most active scrip with a turnover of Rs 225.94 crore of the total volume of business of Rs 1730.84 crore which was remarkably higher than Rs 1423.99 crore posted yesterday. Pentafour Software spurted by Rs 49 to Rs 1,200 on fresh support. SBI improved by Rs 6.10 to Rs 264.50, Reliance by Rs 4.50 to Rs 170.10, Satyam Computer by Rs 15.85 to Rs 1,528, Hindustan Lever by Rs 40 to Rs 2,330, Telco by Rs 10.05 to Rs 184.80 and Tisco by Rs 4.60 to Rs 114.60.
