Shiv Sena workers today attacked and damaged outlets owned by retail chains Shoppers Stop and Lifestyle and popular fast food eatery McDonald8217;s during a demonstration in Mulund to demand more employment opportunities for 8216;8216;sons of the soil8217;8217;.
Shouting slogans, Sena workers led by local leader Shishir Shinde also took written undertakings from the managements of the outlets that they would give preference to Maharashtrians while recruiting candidates in future. They also demanded that the managements of these chains retrench all non-Maharashtrians employed at these outlets in the next two months.
8216;8216;These malls have come up on mill land where a majority of Maharashtrians were employed. They were displaced when the mills shut down. So why should non-Maharashtrians be employed at the cost of Maharashtrians,8217;8217; said a party worker, Arvind Shinde.
Sena sources said they plan to intensify the 8216;8216;sons of the soil8217;8217; campaign against non-Maharashtrians throughout Mulund. Shishir is known to be a supporter of Raj Thackeray who is actively waging the campaign. This stand of the Sena8217;s Mulund unit is a setback to party executive president Uddhav Thackeray8217;s efforts to launch the 8216;8216;Mee Mumbaikar8217;8217; campaign aimed at development of Mumbai and its suburbs.
