Sergeant Bapi Sen of the Kolkata Police died today, five days after being battered by five reserve force constables when he prevented them from harassing a woman.
Sen, 36, is survived by his widow and two children. ‘‘The Chief Minister told us that apart from taking care of the education of my brother’s children he would help us in all the ways he can,’’ said Joydev Sen, Bapi’s elder brother.
DCP, Kolkata police headquarters, Shivaji Ghosh said: ‘‘We will arrange for a job for his widow.’’
DCP, central division, Zulfiqar Hasan, said a murder charge has been slapped against the five accused Reserve Force policemen. ‘‘While we have started departmental proceedings against the five constables we have also charged them with Section 302 of IPC which is a murder charge. We will see to it that they get the maximum punishment,” Hasan said.
In another development, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has demanded a CBI inquiry into why Sen was officially declared dead today, when according to her information, he had died four days ago. ‘‘I have information that the announcement was deferred because of my rally,’’ Mamata said at her rally.
Meanwhile, hundreds of people — Bapi’s friends, relatives and well-wishers — poured into the hospital and the cremation ground to pay their last respects.
