VADODARA, Feb 15: The current advances in biotechnology and genetic engineering were highlighted by former head of the Botany department, M S University A R Mehta at the A R Chavan Memorial lecture on Biotechnology: A Promise for the Future8217;, organised by the Botany Department here on Saturday.
Stating that biotechnology with the production of human insulin improved varieties of potato and tomato as well as new rape seed crop, he said any development in the field contributed to the development of farmers as their yield improved and they could get better returns.
8220;The traditional breeder has helped provide information about the genome of important plants,8221; he said, adding, the information on genome is so exhaustive that a number of books could be written on them.
8220;Unlike the traditional method, now one can mix specific gene and the unwanted genetic make-up can be eliminated without affecting the yield or the quality of crop,8221; Mehta said.
Presiding over the lecture, university Vice-Chancellor Anil Kane said Botany should be made a compulsory subject for all disciplines. Regretting that people knew only a few names of plants, he said the university arboretum, which had a collection of several rare species, would be opened for the general public soon. 8220;A write-up of the plants will also be put up so that school children know more about the plants,8221; Kane said during his address to the gathering.
