SURAT, June 30: More than 100 residents of Varachha stoned employees of the Surat Electricity Company SEC, on Tuesday morning, as the employees were laying an electricity cable. The mob, mostly women, also stoned the company8217;s vehicle by breaking all its window panes, before the police arrived and brought the situation under control. However, no one was seriously injured in the incident, the police said.

According to information, a group of Surat Electricity Company workers were laying an underground cable in the Nityanand Society, near the electric sub-station in the Varachha area at around 10 a.m., when 100-odd women along with three men reached the spot and objected to the employees digging there. Arguments lead to high tempers and the mob began pelting stones at them and damaged their vehicle.

Champaklal Manjrawala, an SEC employee, who was also stoned in the incident, lodged a complaint in the Varachha police station stating that a more than a 100 women, and three men 8212; whom he identified as 8212; Shambhubhai, Laxmanbhai and one Ramani 8212; obstructed their work and resorted to stone throwing and and damaged their vehicle.

PSI Sisodia of the Varachha police station told Express Newsline that a case under rioting, forming an unlawful assembly, obstructing public servants in their duties and mischief had been registered against the accused. No arrests have, however, been made, the police said.
