Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas leads the competition for the Asian Paints 9th Annual Star Screen Awards to be held on January 16, 2003, in Mumbai.

The film has snagged as many as 21 nominations in categories as Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Shah Rukh Khan), Best Actress (Aishwarya Rai), Best Supporting Actress (Madhuri Dixit, Kiron Kher) and Best Music (Ismail Darbar) among others.

Rajkumar Santoshi’s The Legend of Bhagat Singh comes a distant second with 13 nominations. Ramgopal Varma’s Company is at third place with 12 nominations.

In the Best Film category, Devdas, The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Company compete with Aankhen and Encounter. Meanwhile, Abbas-Mustan (Humraaz) and Mani Shanker (16th December) vie for the Best Director trophy with Ramgopal Varma, Rajkumar Santoshi and Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Akshaye Khanna (Deewangee) and Vivek Oberoi (Saathiya) vie for the Best Actor award with Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgan (nominated twice), while Karisma Kapoor (Shakti), Preity Zinta (Dil Hai Tumhara), Rani Mukherji (Saathiya) and Tabu (Filhaal) compete for the Best Actress statuette with Aishwarya Rai.

For the Best Music award, the soundtracks of Kaante, Raaz and Sur compete with those of Devdas and The Legend of Bhagat Singh.

Arya Babbar, Lucky Ali, Palash Sen, Sonu Sood and Vivek Oberoi are nominated in the Most Promising Newcomer (Male) category, while Amrita Rao, Dipanita Sharma, Esha Deol, Gauri Karnik and Sanjana have been nominated for Most Promising Newcomer (Female).

Small-budget films like Encounter, 16th December and Agnivarsha have been nominated in significant categories along with such giants as Devdas, The Legend of Bhagat Singh and Kaante.
