VADODARA, Oct 21: Section of students of the M S University8217;s science faculty stayed away from classes on Thursday in protest against their authorities8217; decision against allowing them to opt for a change in their primary subjects.

Till last year, students were allowed to change subjects as late as February. A pass per cent of only 23 per cent convinced authorities that late changes were to blame.

However, general secretary of the students union, Prakash Verma said, 8220;The faculty authorities cannot take away the students8217; right to study a subject of his/her choice.8221;

Verma added that if students were not allowed to pursue subjects of their choice, the results would remain very poor anyway.

He claimed that students who had not been allowed to opt for a change last year were the ones who had fared badly in their examinations.

Clarifying that all changes have not been banned, Vice-dean of the faculty S R Pandya said, 8220;We have given the option to the students wherever there were vacancies.8221;

He added that the faculty could not afford to allow students to continue to opt for changes even if they did not have the required percentages. Pandya added that the decision to restrict the change was taken unanimously by faculty authorities, and there was no reason for them to crumble under student pressure.
