Your editorial 8216;House arrest8217; IE, July 24 refers to the washing out, even before the monsoons arrive, of Parliament8217;s pre-recess budget or monsoon session by pandemonium created by the BJP-led NDA on each and every conceivable issue. Virtually no legislative work has been done in the 17 sittings held so far. If the government and the opposition cannot hammer out some solution to daily uproars, your seemingly outlandish suggestion to call off the August 16-September 3 second part of the session may indeed be a better idea than meeting everyday, having an average of three daily adjournments, and then repeating this every day, with occasional bouts of normalcy 8212; like the occasional bursts of monsoon rain the capital has been having in this unusually prolonged summer.

Too many days

8226; There is another important issue on which reform must be urgently considered 8216;Nariman point: Let8217;s make judiciary accountable8217;, IE, July 26. Why should the legacy of the British Raj, of taking vacations, be continued? I feel all courts should work around the year as do all private and public organisations. This will be one way of decreasing the huge backlog.

8226; Fali Nariman8217;s proposed law should have been enacted soon after Independence itself.

Don8217;t obstruct

8226; The stand taken by CITU that it is the democratic right of political parties to conduct agitations does not mean terrorising the public into refraining from attending work, and damaging property. The champions of democracy and people8217;s rights forget that they have responsibilities to see that the common man8217;s life is not disturbed. Kudos to citizens like B.G. Deshmukh for taking up the common cause. The high court penalty on the Shiv Sena and the BJP should serve as a reminder to organisers of protests that they are not above the law.

Whose law?

8226; Complicity between politicians and criminals is so thick that it is difficult, sometimes, to differentiate between the two. The recent arrest warrant issued against a Union minister, Shibu Soren, of the Congress-led UPA government in connection with a crime committed in 1975 in Jharkhand is a classic example. The most surprising thing is that he is absconding and the police are searching for him. This makes a mockery of our democracy.

Slowly, Veeru

8226; Before the start of the Asia Cup, Virendra Sehwag had expressed his desire to score a double century. Following his performance in the tournament so far, one wonders, in how many innings does he plan to score 200 runs! While there is no doubting Sehwag8217;s ability to score runs aplenty, it is high time that he exercises some restraint as he tends to instinctively start playing his shots from the word go. Let him get his eye in, study the pitch conditions and learn to build his innings gradually.
