CHANDIGARH, March 4: After a two-hour heated discussion, the Finance and Contracts Committee of the Municipal Corporation today accorded its approval for continuing with the practice of giving sanitation work to private parties in parts of the city. These areas include Badheri, Buterla, Sectors 41, 42 and 45 and parts of the Manimajra Housing Complex, where the terms of the present contractors end on March 31.
The committee has also recommended relaxation in the MC resolution to pave the way for new entrants to participate in the bid. As per the amended resolution, the contractors will have to get their firms registered with the UT Labour Department after 30 days of the award of sanitation work.
At present, only registered contractors are eligible for the auction.
Besides making it mandatory for contract labours to sport a blue-coloured arm band, the committee recommended a penalty of Rs 2,500 against contractors for their failure to comply with the terms and conditions of the contract. The Municipal Commissioner, however, reserved the right to complete the work at the cost of the contractor.
Talking to Newsline, Mayor and ex-officio chairman of the committee Kewal Krishan Adiwal said the committee has also recommended the continuation of paid parking in five parking slots from April 1. The date of auction of the parking sites at Lake Club, Shanti Kunj, Sector 17 District Courts, Terrace Garden and Dhillon Theatre will be finalised after its approval by the 29-member House.
An estimate cost of Rs 18 lakh has been sanctioned for the purchase of three vibratory road-rollers for repair and patch work. The change of status of the Sector 47 Janjghar to a Janjghar-cum-community centre has also been recommended. The matter was tabled by area councillor Ranjana Shahi.
