Sania Mirza and her Italian partner Francesca Schiavone reached the quarter-finals of the 1,500,000 Braclays Dubai Tennis Championships after winning their first round encounter in straight sets.

The Indo-Italian combine beat formidable wild card pair of Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova and Amelie Mauresmo of France 6-4, 6-4 in the opener at the WTA Tier-II Hard court event last night.

The winners next play the winners of the match between top seeded pair of Zimbawean Cara Black and American Liezel Huber and the Chinese duo of Shuai Peng and Tiantian Sun.

Sania would open her singles campaign, where she has been given wild card entry, against Russian qualifier Vera Dushevina. If the India number one clears the first hurdle, she would be up against fourth seed Serbian sensation Jelena Jankovic.
