Sania Mirza quelled a late challenge from Laura Granville to down the unseeded American 6-3, 7-5 and move into the third round of the US Open here today.

Seeded 26th, Sania was made to sweat for one hour and 22 minutes and the win pits the Indian against sixth seeded Anna Chakvetadze in the third round after the Russian beat Australian Nicole Pratt 6-3, 6-4 in another second round match.

Bhupathi wins, Paes out: It was a mixed day for India in men’s doubles. Mahesh Bhupathi and his Serbian partner Nenad Zimonjic entered the second round defeating the Russian combination of Igor Kunitsyn and Dmitry Tursunov 6-3, 7-5. However, Leander Paes and Martin Damm of the Czech Republic lost 7-6 (1), 3-6, 4-6 to the French duo of Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut in the first round itself.
