Merge the two telecom PSUs, cut government control over the merged entity and make internet access more widespread, WorldTel CEO Sam Pitroda said on Wednesday.
‘‘Don’t dither on the merger. Do it,’’ suggested Pitroda, who is often credited for the benefits from opening up private telephony in the country.
As member of the National Advisory Council, Pitroda said he could share expertise on regulating and managing the growing telecom networks, but he must be asked to do so first.
‘‘I will share my thoughts,’’ he said, ‘‘If I am asked to.’’
Though Pitroda gave Indian telecom a positive health check on Wednesday, he said there was needless controversy over the merger of BSNL and MTNL at a conference on business leadership organised by CII and FICCI.
‘‘Merger is the way forward. Because one part is public and the other part is private, when you merge both, the new entity will automatically be public. Then you sell a bigger piece of the merged company to the public and reduce government stake,’’ he said.
