BLOEMFONTEIN (SOUTH AFRICA), NOV 1: South Africa beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 13 runs in the first Test today. Zimbabwe were dismissed for 212 in their second innings after totalling 192 on the first day. South Africa scored 417 in their first innings.
The match ended with the first ball of the fourth over after lunch on the fourth day when Henry Olonga was caught at mid-off by a diving Jonty Rhodes off the bowling of left-arm spinner Paul Adams for 24 — his highest Test score.
Zimbabwe, who resumed on 123 for five, had limped to lunch on 194 for eight.
Adams bowled Guy Whittall for 51 in the second over of the session, ending 125 minutes of defiance from the No 8 batsman in which he faced 91 balls and hit nine fours.
Adams finished with 4-31, but the man-of-the-match award went to Jacques Kallis, who took 4-68 and scored 64.
The second Test is in Harare from November 11-15.
